Wind and Percussion Ensemble Placement Auditions
August 18–21, 2009

Ensembles

Auditions are required for placement into the following ensembles:

Wind Ensemble (Rehearsals: MWF 1:00-2:30)
Symphonic Band (Rehearsals: TTh 3:30-5:20)
Symphony Orchestra (Rehearsals: MTTh 3:30-5:20)

In addition, the following ensemble is available to non-majors without audition:

University Band (Rehearsals: T 6:00-7:20)

Audition Policy

All music majors and scholarship recipients are required to audition and be available to play in the three major ensembles listed above. Consequently, all music majors and scholarship recipients are expected to keep their afternoons completely conflict-free until after the audition results have been posted. Wind players will rotate semesters between the KU Wind Ensemble and the KU Symphony Orchestra.

Audition Schedule

All auditions are blind and will be held during the times listed below. To preserve the anonymity of the process, it is imperative that students audition at the assigned times. Beginning Monday, August 10, students may sign-up in the band office for specific audition times using their KU ID numbers only.

	Tuesday, August 18
		1:00 – 4:30 pm	Clarinet
	Wednesday, August 19
		Noon – 1:30 pm	Saxophone
		2:00 – 3:30 pm	Tuba/Euphonium
		4:00 – 5:30 pm	French Horn
	Thursday, August 20
		Noon – 3:30 pm	Trumpets
		4:00 – 5:00 pm	Oboes
		6:30 – 8:30 pm	Flutes
	Friday, August 21
		Noon – 1:30 pm	Trombones
		2:00 – 5:00 pm	Percussion (15-minute auditions)
		5:30 – 7:00 pm	Bassoons

Audition Requirements

Auditions are scheduled at 7-minute intervals and consist of the following:

5 Prepared Excerpts*
Sight-reading

Excerpts will be posted here on July 1, 2009. Music majors and scholarship recipients are required to perform all 5 musical excerpts (A & B list). Non-majors that are not on a scholarship may elect to perform the first three excerpts only (B list). However, students that elect to play the B list only will not receive full credit (see below).

Scoring and Placement

Auditions are scored using the point system detailed below. Placement is determined by the total score of all judges. Ensemble rosters will be posted as soon as possible.
